About Regions and Zones

Regions in a GCP are geographical locations, so whenever you launch any resource like compute Engine, you will get to choose a region, which will specify a particular place where your server resides.

In my case, I chose a region as

I will get to the zone in a moment.

Currently, there are 35 regions in GCP refer to this link for more info.

https://cloud.google.com/about/locations

You choose a region based on the following:-

1. Latency

Latency is one of the major factors we have to consider while selecting a Region. Which reduces our network latency while going to such a website. We need a region which is closer to me.

2. Compliance

You are bound by the law or Rules & Regulations while selecting a region to store your data. Which you must follow.

3. Cost

The cost will impact our decision when choosing a region, which we should consider. In GCP the price varies from one region to another region.

As you can see cost varies in different regions.

4. Services Availability

Now, Most of the time you might not get the service which you seek. So, you have to check whether that particular service is available in your region or not before proceeding.

As you can see from the above image the service won't be available in every region, So you have to consider the service availability before choosing the region.

Zones are useful to make the resources highly available to us which is under the geographical region, Zone contains a physical data centre which shares the same network and power infrastructure, providing high availability and redundancy.

Each GCP region has multiple zones, and each zone is identified by a unique name, such as us-central1-a, europe-west1-b, or asia-east1-c.

That's it, for now, we will continue further more in next blog.

Hope you liked it. Will see you on the next topic ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
